This article is really helpful. I've been reflecting on how pain, anger awareness and expression and memory reconsolidation research can intertwine to help people recover from pain. I love the time traveler practice for it's ability to not only help one improve the ability to feel, process and release anger, but also how this seems to lead to these particular memories being less triggering (or maybe not triggering) of the subconscious processes in the present. I'd love your perspective on how this ties into memory reconsolidation.
Kent the time traveler visualization IS a memory reconsolidation exercise. It’s based on the research by Dr Melissa Farmer and others. It’s also a form of direct exposure to the memory, but not to relive it. Instead, we’re looking to change it because our memories are unreliable and deteriorate anyway. It also allows people the opportunity for direct exposure to the emotions that they’ve been avoiding. Full expression and release is encouraged! As emotional expression goes up, physical sensation decreases, and the nervous system comes out of its previously protective state.
